This week, the University of Arizona renews one of the oldest traditions in the nation – Homecoming, a celebration at the UA that dates back to Thanksgiving Day in 1914.

Part of the fun will be crowning the Homecoming king and queen. Ten young people from around campus have been nominated, and the winners will be chosen this week by a student vote.

The nominees, all seniors, are picked by campus student groups and must turn in a written application, participate in a mixer and a formal interview. The UA student body will vote their choices electronically Nov. 2-3.

The new king and queen will be announced the evening of Nov. 4 at the annual Homecoming bonfire and pep rally held on the west side of Old Main near the Memorial Fountain.

The Homecoming royalty tradition began more than 60 years ago, in 1947, when students elected Ruth Tackett as the first queen. She was crowned on Nov. 22, likely the happiest event of the day as the visiting Marquette Golden Eagles beat the Cats 39-21.

This year's football game pits the UA against Utah, with kickoff at 4 p.m.
