Tribute to Honor Hispanic Women’s Contributions

The event, taking place on Oct. 25, will honor the contributions of Hispanic women in Southern Arizona and benefit scholarship programs and services offered by the UA Hispanic Alumni Club.
Tickets for the Woman's Plaza of Honor tribute honoring Hispanic Women in Southern Arizona on Tuesday are $30 each, of which $15 is a tax-deductible donation.
A celebration that honors the contributions of Hispanic Women in Southern Arizona will take place on Oct. 25 from 5-7 p.m. at the University of Arizona's Women's Plaza of Honor, a site that publicly and permanently celebrates women who have made significant contributions to the history of Arizona or have enriched the lives of others.
Co-hosting the event are the department of gender and women's studies, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Hispanic Women's Tribute committee, the Women's Plaza of Honor Committee and the UA Hispanic Alumni. They are looking to honor the contributions of Hispanic women and raise funds to benefit scholarship programs and services offered by the UA Hispanic Alumni Club.
RSVP tickets for the celebration are $30 each, of which $15 is a tax-deductible donation.
Donations to the UA Hispanic Alumni Club since 1986 have resulted in 2,500 scholarships worth more than $5.3 million. The club promotes academic excellence among Hispanic students at the University, provides financial and mentoring support to qualified and deserving students, and develops links with alumni and supporters in the professional and business community.
"We are having a party and knew that if we did it in conjunction with the UA Hispanic Alumni we would double the fun and benefit a great cause," said Edith Auslander, a Hispanic Women Tribute committee member and a development consultant for the UA Foundation.
During the celebration, Auslander said, a tribute stone marker will be unveiled and serve as an eternal reminder of the many contributions of Hispanic women at the UA and in the surrounding communities.
The stone marker will be engraved with the words "Life, Soul, Heart, Sisters, Daughters, Intellect, Knowledge, Mothers, Hands."
UA President Eugene G. Sander and the dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, John Paul Jones, III, will speak during the program that includes music and refreshments.
The Woman's Plaza offers alumni, employees and students of the UA, members of the community and people everywhere the opportunity to commemorate outstanding women throughout the year.
The Women's Plaza of Honor is sponsored by the Women's Studies Advisory Council, a part of the UA's department of women's studies. The leadership team consists of University and community women who have set the goal of raising $3 million to fund an endowment for Women's Studies and to cover construction costs for the plaza.
