Depending on the whims of our monsoon weather, Sixth Street near Arizona Stadium will be closed for all or part of the July 23-24 weekend.

The columns that will support the new video scoreboard will be painted this weekend. As a result, Sixth Street will be closed to avoid accidentally spraying passing cars. The traffic plan that was used for the previous closures will be in effect this weekend.

If the weather cooperates and the painters can work all day Saturday, the closure will last only one day, said Melissa Dryden, facilities, planning and design spokeswoman.

A rain delay, however, will stretch the project into Sunday. Forecasts currently call for a chance of rain on Saturday. In any case, expect Sixth Street to be closed, as necessary, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors to Sixth Street businesses and the University will be detoured through campus – all other traffic will be detoured at Campbell and Euclid avenues.

Work on installing the video screen is scheduled to begin on Aug. 1.
