Sign Up for 2012 Cats in the Community Day
This year's partner is World Care, which will get a facelift from the UA community on March 3.
Volunteer registration is open for Cats in the Community Day, the UA's annual employee and student volunteer event, affectionately known as "The UA's Extreme Nonprofit Makeover." This year's project is scheduled for Saturday, March 3.
Cats in the Community Day is a program of the UA Office of Community Relations.
The project partner is World Care Civilian Emergency Relief Center. Many people have heard of World Care's disaster relief efforts throughout Arizona and the world. Less well-known are its other humanitarian aid programs – "Tools for Schools," "Tools for Health" and "Recycling for Humanity." World Care's reach is global, but 87 percent of World Care's resources are used in Southern Arizona.
The Cats Day team selected World Care for the 2012 project because of the amazing work it accomplishes with limited resources said Holly Altman, director of outreach and community partnerships for the Office of Community Relations. World Care operates from a former TUSD school – a 40,000-square-foot warehouse on 9.7 acres – with only eight paid staff members, assisted by volunteers, responsible for carrying out day-to-day programs and helping disaster victims.
Last year, the beneficiary was Sewell Elementary School.
On March 3, 350 to 400 UA employee and student volunteers will work together to transform World Care’s site. Volunteers will redesign the courtyard for community events – including the creation of a Ben's Bells mural – modernize World Care's emergency response center to also serve as a community meeting room, create educational signs, improve storage capacity, paint, clean, organize and run drives for World Care's most-needed items.
People can register to work three-hour shifts in groups or as individuals. If you have a group that is interested in working as a team, each individual needs to register online, but please have a representative contact Holly Altman at email@example.com or 626-4671.
