<p><br /><br />by Katie Riley<br />AHSC Public Affairs<br /><br />Team Arizona brought home more than 20 medals from the 2000 U.S. Transplant Games, which concluded this weekend in Florida. Seventeen of the 38 Team Arizona athletes -- including 7-year-old Kelsey Cresenzo, the team's youngest participant -- received their transplants at University Medical Center. <br /><br />Four were liver transplant recipients, two were heart/lung recipients and 11 received new hearts at UMC. More than 1,800 athletes competed in the 2000 U.S. Transplant Games, held June 21-24 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Two thousand donor families also were<br />present.<br /><br />"The Games are proof positive that organ donation and transplant work. We're thrilled to be alive and living life to the fullest," said John Landers, manager of Team Arizona and a UMC heart transplant recipient in 1991. "It's an overwhelming kind of experience," added Landers, who brought home a bronze medal in racquetball. "Even if you lose, you've already won just to be there."<br /><br />San Antonio Spurs forward and former University of Arizona Wildcat Sean Elliott was spokesman for the event.
