Congratulations to the following University of Arizona employees who have been recognized recently in their fields:

University of Arizona Cancer Center researchers M. Peter Lance and Steven P. Stratton were selected as the 2012 recipients of the Sydney E. Salmon, M.D., distinguished senior investigator award and distinguished junior investigator award, respectively. The awards are presented in memory of the UA Cancer Center’s founding director, Sydney E. Salmon. Lance and Stratton received their awards and presented their latest research findings on May 8. The Salmon Awards recognize Arizona Cancer Center faculty members for their leadership in cancer research, grant support, publications, community service and clinical responsibilities.

Judy Berg, clinical professor at the College of Nursing, has been elected to serve as president of the Western Institute of Nursing. WIN is one of four regional nursing research societies in the United States that have representation on the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science. The council's mission is to be a strong voice for nursing science at national and international levels. As president of WIN, Berg will serve on the council's steering committee in Washington, D.C., from 2012-2014. WIN is the only regional research society that includes nursing education and practice in its mission. Berg says she is honored to serve the two-year term as president and will work toward expanding mentoring activities for all members.

Emma Blake, assistant professor of anthropology, has won the prestigious 2012-2013 Rome Prize in the area of Ancient Studies. Each year, the prize, given by the American Academy in Rome, is awarded to 30 emerging artists and scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers who represent the highest standard of excellence in the arts and humanities. The winners' names were announced at the Janet & Arthur Ross Rome Prize Ceremony in New York City on April 26. Recipients of the 2012-2013 Rome Prizes are provided with a fellowship that includes a stipend, a study or studio, and room and board for six months to two years in Rome. Blake’s fellowship is for 11 months. The project for which she received the fellowship is a study of regional social networks and the subsequent emergence of ethnic groups in pre-Roman Italy.

Two College of Nursing faculty members have been named to the Fabulous 50 nurses list compiled by the Tucson Nurses Week Foundation. Connie Miller, clinical assistant professor, has been a nurse for 29 years. She graduated from the UA College of Nursing in 1995 with a master’s degree in maternal newborn nursing and nursing education. Cindy Rishel, clinical faculty member, has been a registered nurse for 41 years and is the administrator of nursing research and practice for The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus. Both nurses, along with the other members of this year’s Fabulous 50, were recognized at a gala Saturday at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort. Since 1995, the Tucson Nurses Week Foundation selects 50 nurses annually to honor for their accomplishments, innovations and contributions to the community.
