The Arizona football team will begin its fall camp this week, training in Tucson before spending several days at Fort Huachuca, a U.S. Army installation. The Wildcats will then return to campus for another week of practices before classes begin Aug. 20.
Tucson resident Matt Grevers took the gold medal and former Arizona All-American Nick Thoman won a silver medal in the men’s 100-meter backstroke at the London Olympics on July 30. Grevers, who has trained at UA's Hillenbrand Aquatic Center since 2008, also broke an Olympic record with a time of 52.16 seconds.
UA track and field members Brigetta Barrett and Edgar Rivera-Morales each earned additional academic honors for the 2012 season. Barrett was named the 2012 Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, the second-straight year she has received the award. Barrett and Rivera-Morales were both named USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees. Barrett will compete in the 2012 Olympics in the high jump.
With the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games just a few days away, here is a quick look at the competition schedule for the UA's 24 athletes and coaches preparing to participate. The official competition schedule opens on July 25: Current UA student-athlete Ana-Maria Montoya will be in action as Colombia's women's soccer team takes on Korea.
Twenty-four athletes and coaches with connections to the UA will pursue their Olympic dreams in London. Sports represented will include basketball, track and field, soccer, cycling and swimming and diving. The games begin July 27.
