Distance Runner, UA Alumnus Going for Gold

UA alumnus Abdi Abdirahman, a distance runner, will compete in his fourth Olympics this summer. A rare feat in any discipline, it is especially so in long-distance running, with the sport's high potential for burnout and injury. Only two other American male distance runners have competed in four Olympics.

Philadelphia Eagles Get Nick Foles in the Fold

Former UA quarterback Nick Foles, picked in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, has signed a four-year deal with the team. During his senior season, Foles set Arizona records in completions (387) and yards (4,334).

Wildcats Softball Advances to Super Regionals

A win against Notre Dame over the weekend has advanced the Wildcats softball team to the Super Regionals. No. 13 Arizona will play the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners on May 25-26. The May 25 game will be televised by ESPNU, and the May 26 action will be on ESPN.

Cyclist Looking for Memorable Ride at London Games

UA alumna Kathryn Bertine's goal is to become the first female cyclist for St. Kitts and Nevis, a two-island Caribbean nation, in the Olympics. The Bronxville, N.Y. native who has dual citizenship earned a fine arts master's degree from the UA in 2000.

Seven members of the UA football team earned spots on Phil Steele's 2012 Preseason All-Pac-12 Teams. Three key players on the UA offense were recognized, along with four members of the defense. The Wildcats officially will open the 2012 season on Sept. 1 against Toledo in Arizona Stadium.

U.S. Swimming Hopefuls Begin Road to London

USA Olympic hopefuls from the UA men's and women's swimming and diving teams and Tucson Ford Aquatics are training at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center for next month's Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. Together, the Arizona swimming team and Tucson Ford Aquatics will have the biggest representation at the trials, with more than 50 swimmers attending.

UA Men's Basketball Signs Three More Recruits

Arizona Softball Selected to Host NCAA Regional

Arizona will make its 26th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regionals this week, dating to 1987, head coach Mike Candrea's second year in Tucson. Candrea has won 23 Regionals and eight national championships. Arizona has hosted the initial round 16 times and the Super Regionals six times.

The UA's Shirley Reilly has won the women's wheelchair division of the Boston Marathon. Reilly finished in a time of 1 hour, 37 minutes, 36 seconds, just ahead of Wakako Tsuchida of Japan. She participated in the 2004 and 2008 Paralympic Games and is a member of the 2012 team.

NAU Picks UA Alumnus for Basketball Head Coach

Jack Murphy, a UA alumnus and former Arizona men's basketball team manager, recruiting coordinator, administrative assistant, video coordinator and director of operations, has been named head men's basketball coach for Northern Arizona University. Murphy currently is the assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Memphis.

With Arizona softball's 4-2 victory over Utah this week, head coach Mike Candrea earned his 1,300th career victory. Candrea is the sport's fastest coach to the milestone, and the second ever. He also is the sport's second-winningest coach of all time and carries a career record of 1,300-287-2 (.819).

UA Dominates Pac-12 Diving Awards

UA senior Ben Grado and diving coach Omar Ojeda were named Pac-12 diver and coach of the year, Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott announced this week. Grado was the first diver to sweep all three events at the Pac-12 Championships since Arizona State University's Micky Benedetti in 2008.
