UA Grad Students Take on Tucson Revitalization Project

UA graduate students in the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture are working on a proposal to bring water to the Santa Cruz and other areas in downtown Tucson and to revitalize the area and inspire city planners with new ideas.

UA research shows that young women with high levels of family support and low levels of outside pressure to achieve the thin ideal have a more positive body image than others. Women who were armed with skills to deal with stress also showed a positive body image.

UA Project CENTRL a 'Life-Changing Experience'

A leadership program sponsored by UA Cooperative Extension has created a network of public officials throughout rural Arizona. Project CENTRL, a two-year program, began in the early 1980s. Since then, more than 500 people have graduated from the program.

Southwest in for an Above Average Wildfire Season

After a record-breaking wildfire season in 2011, it seems the Southwest is heading for another active year. UA climatologist Gregg Garfin has worked on fire outlooks: "It's based on wind and slope or topography of an area and then the fuel moisture of everything from grasses to big heavy dead logs and limbs."

Dr. Michael Cohen, a clinical professor of pediatrics at the UA College of Medicine, is a longtime advocate of reading to babies as a way to improve early childhood literacy. He has been recognized for his volunteer work with Reach Out and Read, a nonprofit organization that recommends parents read to their children daily starting at age six months.

Making negative statements about your body, such as "I'm so fat," and "I need to work out more," may be deleterious to your body image and mental health, finds a new UA study. The results show that engaging in "fat talk" predicts lower satisfaction with one's body and higher levels of depression.
