A.E. Douglass started the astronomy department and Steward Observatory at the UA. This led to the building of multiple observatories on Southern Arizona mountaintops and thrust the UA into the position of being the preeminent school for the study of astronomy.

Philadelphia Eagles Get Nick Foles in the Fold

Former UA quarterback Nick Foles, picked in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, has signed a four-year deal with the team. During his senior season, Foles set Arizona records in completions (387) and yards (4,334).

Best Arizona High Schools Offer UA Engineering Course

Eight of the top 15 high schools in Arizona ranked by U.S. News & World Report offer ENGR 102 HS, the engineering introduction course from the UA College of Engineering. For fall 2012, 25 Arizona high schools are scheduled to offer the course in cities ranging from Yuma to Phoenix.

Wildcats Softball Advances to Super Regionals

A win against Notre Dame over the weekend has advanced the Wildcats softball team to the Super Regionals. No. 13 Arizona will play the No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners on May 25-26. The May 25 game will be televised by ESPNU, and the May 26 action will be on ESPN.

UA alumna Kathryn Bertine's goal is to become the first female cyclist for St. Kitts and Nevis, a two-island Caribbean nation, in the Olympics. The Bronxville, N.Y. native who has dual citizenship earned a fine arts master's degree from the UA in 2000.

Michelle Coe, Irene Liang and Carol Seanez, all UA undergraduates, have been named Udall Scholars. With three students named, the UA tied with the University of Georgia for having the most scholars out of 70 institutions.

Seven Wildcats Earn Preseason Football Nods

Seven members of the UA football team earned spots on Phil Steele's 2012 Preseason All-Pac-12 Teams. Three key players on the UA offense were recognized, along with four members of the defense. The Wildcats officially will open the 2012 season on Sept. 1 against Toledo in Arizona Stadium.

UA Flandrau, SkyCenter to Host Solar Eclipse Viewing Events

Flandrau Science Center will hold its "A 'Crescent Sun' Over Tucson" viewing party for the annular solar eclipse on May 20. UA astronomy experts will be on hand to answer questions. A viewing event also will take place at the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter, which will stream images live over the Web.
