n the late 1960s the theory of plate techtonics gave scientists a fundamental understanding
of why the Earth’s surface looks the way it does. The theory holds that the Earth’s outer layer
is made up moving plates that move apart, slide parallel to each other, or even collide over
time. The motion of these plates can cause earthquakes, volcanoes, and the formation of mountains.
