Music Festival and Symposium Begins Oct. 17

The UA School of Music's "Ives/Copland and the American Spirit Music Festival" features invited world-class muscians as well as UA musicians.

The University of Arizona School of Music invites the public to its second annual two-day music festival celebrating two composers from the 20th and 21st centuries.

World-class musicians from across the country, including musicians from the UA, will participate in this year's "Ives/Copland and the American Spirit Music Festival," being held Oct. 17-18.

The festival includes four concerts and an introductory symposium, providing a rich panorama of the music of Charles Ives and Aaron Copland.

The entire School of Music will be engaged, with performances from the Arizona Symphony Orchestra, the UA Wind Ensemble, the Arizona Choir, the Arizona Contemporary Ensemble and faculty from wind, string, voice and piano.

Copland and Ives biographers are invited symposium speakers. Vivian Perlis, director of Yale University's Oral Music History Project, is the biographer of Copland and Jan Swafford is the definitive biographer of Ives.

Pianist Jonathan Shames, a student of Leon Fleischer and Theodore Lettvin, is the featured guest artist. Shames won a finalist diploma in the 1982 Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition.

This project has been made possible in part by donations to the College of Fine Arts Dean's Fund for Excellence.

This event is also co-sponsored by radio station KVOI 1030 AM, "The Voice" Radio and Arizona Public Media's Classical KUAT-FM 90.5/89.7.

The concerts will be held at the Music building on the southeast corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard. Festival passes are $30 for general admission and $15 for students. Tickets can also be purchased by concert for $10 general admission and $5 for students. To buy tickets, call 520-621-1162.
