A new director has been named for The University of Arizona's School of Theatre Arts.

Bruce Brockman, a professor of theatre and chair of the department of theatre at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, will become director of the school.

Bockman, who will suceed Albert Tucci, who retired in January after more than 17 years of service in the UA department, will begin his position at the UA in July.

"We are most excited to have recruited a person of such vast experience in both administration and professional theatre management," Maurice Sevigny, the College of Fine Arts dean, noted in a memorandum.

Sevigny said Brockman "will also be a strong advocate for the college and a skilled representative on the CFA (College of Fine Arts) executive team."

Brockman previously served as chair of the theatre department at Oklahoma State University and also the University of Idaho.

He was artistic director for the Idaho Repertory Theatre from 1988 to 1995; from 1994 through 2001, he served as vice president for commissions of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, a 4,000-member professional association, and also as its liaison to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival; and from 2002 to 2004 he served as president of the institute.

Sevigny also noted that in addition to Brockman's administrative and teaching responsibilities, he works as a professional freelance scene designer and scenic artist. He has recently worked on productions with the Milwaukee Ballet, the Music Theatre of Wichita, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Montana Repertory Theatre, Idaho Theatre for Youth and the American Festival Ballet.

Brockman's stage design work was included in the 1995 United States Institute for Theatre Technology Design Expo Catalog, the 1999 Prague Quadrennial International Design Exhibition and also in two textbooks on stage design.
