The awards recognize staff and appointed professionals for workplace achievements.

During challenging economic times, it can be especially important to recognize employees for their hard work. One way to do that is through the University Staff Awards for Excellence, given annually to outstanding classified staff and appointed professionals.

Nominations for this year's awards are being accepted through Feb. 6, and winners willl be recognized by President Robert N. Shelton during a ceremony on April 13.

Sponsored by the Staff Advisory Council, the Appointed Professionals Advisory Council, Shelton and the President's Cabinet, the awards are given in the following four categories:

Anyone may nominate an employee. Individual nomination forms and criteria are available on the SAC Web site.

All winners receive a framed certificate of recognition. Additional certificates are given to all nominees, who are also invited to attend the awards ceremony and have their picture taken with Shelton.

While this year will mark the 21st annual University Staff Awards for Excellence ceremony. Grace Aranda, co-chair of the UA/SAC Awards for Excellence Team, said that the honor carries special significance this year.

"Especially during financial troubles, everyone is having to give more of themselves to their positions, and it's great for morale to know people appreciate what they're doing," she said.

Nominations are due by 4 p.m. Feb. 6.

Aranda said about 30 nominations are received each year. A judging panel composed of about 16 staff members, appointed personnel, faculty and students from across campus review the nominations and rank them in numerical order before the UA/SAC Awards for Excellence Team determines the winners.
