Viewership Increasing for Local Public TV's News

Arizona Public Media's "Arizona Illustrated" has added several thousand new viewers to its nightly program.

In an age when television audiences are becoming more fractious, Tucson’s local public television news program has dramatically increased its viewing audience.

"Arizona Illustrated," KUAT/Arizona Public Media’s locally produced news show on Channel 6, has grown by 38.5 percent, from 13,000 to 18,000 households per week.

On average, roughly one in five households in this market tunes to the program during the week.

“Each household is, unfortunately, counted only once no matter if they view five nights a week or just once,” said Jack Gibson, general manager for Arizona Public Media.

“Overall, the station’s primetime audience held steady and full week viewing was up 5.3 percent. Given the explosive growth in the number of television channels available, this is indeed good news,” Gibson said.
