Red Ink Takes its Shot at Pop Culture

Red Ink Cover Wazhazhi pod

"Wazhazhi-pod," by Ryan Red Corn (Osage), appears on the cover of the latest issue of Red Ink.

Red Ink, the nation’s only nonprofit, student-run American Indian publication, will celebrate the publication of its latest issue, “Pop Culture.”

A free premiere party will be held at The University of Arizona Poetry Center, 1508 E. Helen St., on Nov. 9 from 7-10 p.m. The event is open to the public.

The evening includes the participation of the following artists and a showcase of their works:

The premiere will feature live entertainment, music, food and a silent auction. All proceeds will go to Red Ink. Red Ink merchandise, including the current issue, past issues and T-shirts, will be available for purchase.

The magazine can also be purchased at Antigone Books, 411 N. Fourth Ave., at local American Indian events or through the Red Ink Web site. The publication is operated under the auspices of the UA American Indian Studies Program, providing a unique forum for up-and-coming Native and non-Native artists and writers to publish their work. The magazine was first published in 1989.

Marinella Lentis, a UA American Indian Studies doctoral student and Red Ink staff member, said, “This team is extremely excited about the publication of the second Red Ink issue we have been able to publish in a year. The magazine had been in a long hiatus before we came along. The new and returning artists featured in this edition are incredibly talented and share their fresh and original views on the topic of pop culture. Their artwork is stunning and their pieces of creative writing are important contributions to contemporary Native American literature.”

Red Ink is the only American Indian publication published exclusively by undergraduate and graduate students. Lentis said the primary mission of Red Ink is to highlight American Indian creative and intellectual expression through poetry, creative writing, artwork, photography, and includes book, music and film reviews.
