The University of Arizona is partnering with the Arizona Science Center to bring its tremendously popular global climate change lecture series to downtown Phoenix.
The public lecture series, "Global Climate Change: A Series of Seven Lectures Exploring Our World and Ourselves," features UA researchers from a variety of scientific disciplines. The lectures will discuss how climate interacts with our biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere and will offer ways to mitigate global climate change through technology and policy.
Our planet is in the midst of significant global climate change that has great potential for affecting the way we live. Visitors to the Arizona Science Center can learn more about the causes, effects and questions surrounding global climate change from world-renowned scientists.
“Climate change is one of the major environmental challenges of this century,” said Joaquin Ruiz, dean of the UA's College of Science. “We’re thrilled that the UA College of Science can provide a public service through these presentations by some of the leading scientists in their fields.”
The first lecture is Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Arizona Science Center’s Irene P. Flinn Theater.
“Climate change and sustainability issues are of growing concern for the public and scientific community," said Chevy Humphrey, Arizona Science Center President & CEO. “We are thrilled to be partnering the UA College of Science. This series presents insightful and thought-provoking programming that will educate, inform and entertain the public about the issues.”
The series will kick-off with a panel discussion featuring Ruiz and several of the speakers on Oct. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
The lecture series was presented in Tucson last fall in front of capacity crowds. "The response to the Tucson lectures was overwhelming," Ruiz said. "We averaged about 800 attendees per event and had many more listen to the lectures online and through podcasts."
