The UA James E. Rogers College of Law is hosting a panel discussion on the use of land and how it affects the environment.

A six-person panel representing governemnt agencies, environmental groups and the private sector will convene at the University of Arizona this month to discuss environmental law and land use.

The student-run Environmental Law Society at the James E. Rogers College of Law is hosting the discussion Oct. 28 at 4:30 p.m. The event will be held in Room 164 of the law school, 1201 E. Speedway Blvd.

The event is open to the public, and while reservations are not required, those who plan to attend are encouraged to contact Christopher Losi at losi@email.arizona.edu for additional details.

The panelists are:

• Grady Gammage Jr., a real estate developer and attorney with Gammage & Burnham in Phoenix
• Carolyn Campbell, executive director of the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection in Tucson
• Rep. Daniel Patterson, a state legislator from Tucson's 29th District
• Frank Cassidy, Marana town attorney and a professor of land use
• Andrew Karic, chief executive officer of Triumph Builders in Tucson
• Magill Weber, an attorney with the Nature Conservancy who specializes in government relations

Each panelist will talk about ways that laws and regulations work to encourage, discourage or influence the pattern of private residential and commercial development throughout the state.

The panlists will also discuss potential improvements to the regulatory system, and audience members will be encouraged to participate in the discussion.

The Environmental Law Society works to promote student interest in and awareness of environmental issues affecting the local and global community. The society hosts a range of films, interdisciplinary discussions and meetings with both local and national experts on a range of legal issues.
