The six selections push Arizona's total draftees to 39 under head coach Andy Lopez, who took over the program in 2002.

Six University of Arizona baseball players were selected on the second day of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Headlines for the UA in the draft include pitcher Jason Stoffel taking honors as the highest-picked Wildcat in the fourth round and the selection of a trio of Arizona pitchers by the Cleveland Indians.

Stoffel was selected just six picks into the second day by the San Francisco Giants, making him the UA's highest-drafted player in 2009 and earning him 117th place in the overall selection.

Stoffel, a native of Agoura, Calif., is the UA's leader for career appearances and saves. The right-hander was the first of three Wildcat pitchers to hear his name called in the first nine rounds.

Fellow pitching staff members Cory Burns and Preston Guilmet were chosen by the Cleveland Indians, as was Dwight Childs, a UA backstop.

Burns, a senior from Glendale, Ariz., who was previously undrafted, was selected in the eighth round and 245th overall. Burns had an impressive senior season that saw him appear in a school record 40 appearances while allowing just 9-of-30 inherited runners to score as a primary set-up man to Stoffel.

One round later, the Indians drafted Burns' classmate Guilmet, a native of Citrus Heights, Calif., with the 275th overall pick in the ninth round. Guilmet, No. 2 all-time in strikeouts at Arizona and No. 4 in the Pac-10, improved upon his 22nd round selection by the Oakland A's in last summer's draft.

UA backstop Childs was drafted by the Indians in the 18th round and was the MLB's 545th overall selection. Childs, a junior, was draft eligible for the first time in his collegiate career and the Indians took notice of the veteran, who turned in a breakout season in which he was named to the All-Pac-10 team.

Pac-10 batting champion Dillon Baird was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Calif., with the 351st overall selection in the 11th round. Baird, from Prescott, Ariz., batted .433 on the season – sixth best in UA and Pac-10 history – and played first base throughout his second season as a Wildcat, but was announced as a third baseman draftee by the Angels.

Brad Glenn was the sixth Wildcat to be drafted on Wednesday, going to the Toronto Blue Jays as the 700th overall selection in the 23rd round. Glenn, a native of Tulsa, Okla., finished in the top 10 of several career offensive categories at Arizona, including home runs as his 43 round-trippers place him second all-time at the school.

A year ago, a school record 11 players were drafted following the UA's second consecutive 40-win season. Among last year's selections were first round picks Ryan Perry (Detroit Tigers) and Daniel Schlereth (Arizona Diamondbacks), each of whom made their Major League debuts this spring.

Over time, a total of 206 Arizona baseball players have been drafted, including 67 in the last 11 seasons. Of the 206 selections, 54 have been taken in the first five rounds.

The six selections push Arizona's total draftees to 39 under head coach Andy Lopez, who took over the program in 2002.

The 2009 draft concluded Thursday.
