GeoDaze is an annual showcase of earth sciences research by undergraduate and graduate students at the UA.
GeoDaze, an annual showcase of earth sciences research by undergraduate and graduate students at The University of Arizona, will be held April 2-4
The first two days include presentations to be held in the Arizona Historical Society auditorium, 949 E. Second St., while the last day will take participants on a field trip.
Research subjects covered by the 35 oral presentations and 36 poster presentations from students in several UA departments include economic geology, geochemistry, geomorphology, geophysics, geoscience education, paleoclimatology, planetary geology and structural geology.
John Smol, a professor of biology at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, will give the keynote address on April 3 at 3:15 p.m.
Smol, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change, will discuss recent climate warming in Arctic lakes and ponds. The title of his talk is "From Controversy to Consensus: Making the Case for Recent Climatic Change in the Arctic Using Lake Sediments."
The event is free and open to the public. For a complete schedule of events, visit http://earth.geo.arizona.edu/geodaze/09/.
GeoDaze culminates with a field trip on April 4 led by geomorphologist Jon Pelletier, a UA associate professor of geosciences. The trip will cover a transect from the floor of the Tucson Basin to the upper elevations of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
There are still some spaces available for the field trip. Register at http://earth.geo.arizona.edu/geodaze/2009/registration.php.
GeoDaze, organized by the graduate students of the UA's department of geosciences, provides a forum for students to present their research and receive feedback from faculty, alumni and peers. The annual event also provides an opportunity for students and faculty to interact with interested community members and representatives of industry and government agencies.
GeoDaze is supported by corporate sponsorship and donations from alumni, faculty and friends of the geosciences department.
