The new partnership of colleges will now be titled The Colleges of Letters, Arts and Science.

University of Arizona Provost Meredith Hay today announced that the College of Fine Arts will join the previously announced academic partnership with the Colleges of Science, Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The new partnership of colleges will now be titled The Colleges of Letters, Arts and Science.

The partnership is part of the UA's ongoing Transformation Plan, which is designed to streamline administrative functions while strengthening the academic areas that will allow the University to excel.

"The addition of the College of Fine Arts to this partnership is an important and necessary step in preserving the highest possible quality of fine arts education at this great University and for the State of Arizona," said Hay. "By reducing administrative overhead we will be able to protect and nurture the world class programs that have distinguished the College of Fine Arts."

The individual colleges will function in unison under the umbrella of the Colleges of Letters, Arts and Science. Science, SBS, Humanities and Fine Arts will continue to be managed by a dean and the overall structure will be governed by the executive dean, Joaquin Ruiz.

"This partnership will advance innovative programs that cross the boundaries of the humanities, arts, social and basic sciences," said Ruiz. "These collaborations will help to strengthen both undergraduate and graduate programs."

It is expected that the consolidation of numerous administrative functions of the four colleges into one larger unit will allow the UA to realize annual savings of several million dollars. Those savings will accrue through the new administrative structure and in the way the University will be able to schedule and offer classes.

In describing the changes, Maurice J. Sevigny, dean of the College of Fine Arts said:  "The proposed partnership promises to preserve our school strengths and stimulate innovative research initiatives and strengthen collaborations that cross the boundaries of the humanities, the arts, social and basic sciences. Such collaborations can inspire new opportunities for grants or strengthen cross-department study and teaching for existing curricular programs.  For example, one transformation proposal we do hope to develop is the college's vision to create an interdisciplinary study and research partnership: The Institute for the Arts of the Americas."
