In Honor of Women
The UA is celebrating Women's Herstory Month during March. Dozens of events are scheduled for the month beginning on Tuesday.
The UA's Women Herstory Month events get kicked off on Tuesday and will include film screenings, panel discussions, workshops and a talent show.
For the month of March, various units throughout The University of Arizona will explore topics associated with womanhood and feminism.
Women's Herstory Month kicks off next week with a series of events that include film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, talent shows, exhibits and conferences.
"As women, we are a group of different individuals with different personalities," said Malia Uhatafe, co-director of the Women's Resource Center.
"Whether it's through storytelling or another form of expression, this provides a new perspective," Uhatafe said. "We don't want to give women just one way of what they should be so by sharing stories, we show that we have a unique culture of different women."
The month's kickoff event will be held March 3 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Women's Plaza of Honor. Free coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be served as people share their stories about womanhood.
Uhatafe noted that the center will screen "Bi The Way," a film that takes a look at bisexual identity in the United States.
"The center has never really touched on the topic of bisexuality," she said. "We've talked about heterosexual, lesbian and gay couples, but the talk about bisexuality is something new to us that we were interested in addressing. It is also a feminist issue."
The center, which is part of the Associated Students of The University of Arizona, is screening three films and is also helping to host the National Organization for Women's Arizona State Conference in Tucson.
"It's exciting," said Uhatafe, who added that Women's Resource Center members have been helping the local chapter with planning since August.
