Jim Furyk, a UA alum, has earmarked $85,000 for The University of Arizona.
Professional golfer Jim Furyk has earmarked $85,000 for The University of Arizona following his participation in the 2008 Ryder Cup matches.
As member of the 2008 United States Ryder Cup team, the PGA Tour of America is donating $200,000 to the charities of Furyk's choice of which a sizeable amount will go to the UA.
Furyk scored 2.5 of the United States’ 16.5 points as the Americans won by 5 points. It was the USA’s first victory since 1999 and just it’s second since 1993. Furyk clinched the win Sunday with his 2 and 1 singles win over Miguel Angel Jiménez.
Furyk, a member of the Arizona men's golf team from 1988-92, has been a member of the PGA Tour since 1993. In that span, he has won 13 tour events and played in the last six Ryder Cup matches.
While at Arizona, Furyk was a member of Arizona's 1992 national championship team. He was a two-time All-American and a three-time all-Pac-10 selection. His 176 career rounds played ranks fourth in Arizona history.
A Mary J. Roby Academic Award winner in 1989 and 1991, Furyk was inducted into the UA Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
Of Furyk's donation to his alma mater, $40,000 will go directly to the school. The remaining $45,000 will be used in conjunction with the PGA of America's Play Golf America University. The program is designed to teach and engage students in the game of golf through PGA professional instruction and other golf programs.
One of the most generous former UA student-athletes, Furyk also has made donations following his five previous Ryder Cup and two Presidents Cup appearances.
Each player and captain of the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team contributed $200,000 to various charitable categories. The PGA of America established this plan in 1999, in which the organization distributes a total of $2.6 million to charities and universities throughout the nation on behalf of the U.S. participants in the Ryder Cup matches.
