Mars Mission Researcher to Discuss Successes

Peter Smith

Peter Smith, senior research scientist and principal investigator for the Phoenix Mars Mission.

Peter Smith, who heads the UA-led Phoenix Mars Mission, will speak about the mission during a public event.

Peter Smith, the principal investigator for the Phoenix Mars Mission, will speak about The University of Arizona-led exploration on the Martian planet during a public event.

Smith will present his lecture, "The PHOENIX Mission: A Trip to the Martian Arctic," on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Room 120 of the Integrated Learning Center.

The event is part of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Evening Lecture Series. Doors to the event, which is open to the public, open at 7 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

Phoenix landed on Mars on May 25 and has since been busy collecting information about the soil and environment on Mars.

Soon after arriving, Phoenix dug a shallow trench and exposed the ice layer that scientists sent the craft to study.

Through cameras, a robotic arm and an array of instruments, the Phoenix team spent the summer remotely operating the spacecraft and studying the arctic soils and ices.

The purpose behind the mission has been to search in an unexplored region of Mars for the ingredients to support life. During his lecture, Smith will give an overview of the mission and talk about the first results.

This lecture series is sponsored by the UA's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the UA/NASA Space Grant Program.
