Sara Pat Badgley won a national competition to cover the convention and is sharing her experience with the UA community.

University of Arizona student Sara Pat Badgley is a citizen reporter covering the Republican National Convention being held in St. Paul, Minn. this week.

Badgley, the winner of “Decision08 Convention Contest” held by the MySpace social networking site, won travel, lodging and an invitation to cover the convention with full press credentials.

“It has been fun to watch and walk the convention floor and see how the convention operates – from how the signs are passed out to the delegates, to seeing how the media covers the event. It is different being in the know versus being told what is happening,” Badgley said.

Badgley is studying communication, journalism and political science at the UA and interned for Sen. Jon Kyl in the fall of 2007. She is currently an intern for state Sen. Tim Bee.

Badgley said the convention has grown to full capacity after getting off to a slow start due to Hurricane Gustav. “The crowd and the excitement are building tonight Gov. Sarah Palin will speak and people have said they are very excited to hear her speech,” Badgley said prior to Palin's speech at the convention on Wednesday night.

Badgley has also noted the attention Arizona and Alaska are getting at the convention. Palin is Alaska's governor and the Republican vice presidential nominee, and Arizona is gaining attention from Sen. John McCain’s bid for the presidency.

I have interviewed delegates from both states and they are enjoying the new experience of being center stage at the convention and are showing a lot of pride and enthusiasm at the extra attention,” Badgley added.
