Will Holst, video communications manager for UANews, received two Rocky Mountain Emmy Award nominations.

Will Holst, video communications manager for UANews, received two Rocky Mountain Emmy Award nominations - marking the first time The University of Arizona's internal news organization has been recognized with an Emmy nomination.

In addition, the UA's public television station, KUAT received nine Rocky Mountain Emmy nominations.

Holst's first nomination is for a story on the Arizona History Museum, which is nominated in the "New Media/Documentary/History and Culture" category.

The second nomination is for a story on the creation of the Large Synaptic Survey Telescope, which is nominated in the "New Media/News Programming" category.

KUAT received 10 Rocky Mountain Emmy Award nominations in 2007, winning one award.

KUAT received the Emmy award last year for "Carnival in Rio," an eight-minute segment produced by Dan Duncan and David Yetman. Duncan and Yetman each took home a statuette for the segment, which aired on KUAT's weeknight newsmagazine "Arizona Illustrated," its Sunday morning bilingual program "Reflexiones" and KUAZ's "Reflexiones Domingo." The award was for the Magazine Format-Feature/Segment category.

Holst wasn't expecting the nomination considering that video news content is still relatively new on UANews.org. "I was really surprised by it," Holst said. "We have only been producing video for UANews for a year, so I am really proud and think it is a great accomplishment."

Through Holst's hire, UANews introduced video as a vehicle to deliver news to the public about UA research, student and faculty achievements and institutional initiatives. "Video is such a useful vehicle because nearly everyone has access to it. The technology has advanced so fast that anyone can share video online," Holst said. "Now the public gets to enjoy the breadth of what the University has to offer."

"Nine Emmy nominations is quite an honor," said Jack Gibson, director and general manager of Arizona Public Media. "It speaks of our entire team's commitment to covering the best of Arizona – from fine arts, to nature, to science. I'm extremely proud of everyone who made these local productions possible as the best public television has to offer."

The awards will be presented on Oct. 4 in Glendale, Ariz. A complete list of winners and nominees for the Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards is available at http://www.rockymountainemmy.org.
