The community event plays a part in funding student scholarships for Middle Eastern Studies.

The University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies invites the public to an opening reception Thursday for its exhibition “Colors & Contrasts: Shades of Meaning in the Middle East.”

The center’s mission is to support and promote Middle Eastern languages and Middle Eastern studies-related teaching and research throughout the University, including the support of student scholarships.

For the past 17 years, the UA Center for Middle Eastern Studies, known as CMES, has organized and hosted an annual photography exhibit featuring vibrant, culturally vivid images captured by friends, faculty, students and colleagues.

“This year’s imagery shows the vivid colors and contrasts of the Middle East, examining meanings behind colors, contrasting views and nuances of symbolism,” Sinclair said.

A total of 225 images were submitted from 17 different countries this year, and 41 photographs were selected for display based on the quality of the photo and relationship to the year’s theme.

Four poster size photographs along with the other 37 photographs selected have been enlarged and mounted and will be exhibited throughout the academic year. “They are beautifully enlarged and mounted and the proceeds from any sales all go for a good cause," Sinclair added.

Copies will be on sale beginning the opening day of the exhibition.

The CMES fosters understanding of the Middle East through an extensive program of outreach to schools and the wider community. School outreach includes lectures, teacher development workshops, summer programming for K-12 teachers and high school students.

The CMES annually awards one or more undergraduate scholarships to UA students studying the Middle East and its languages. The scholarships are funded exclusively by community donations and fundraising activities, including the sale of photos from the annual photo exhibit.

This academic year the center’s board has awarded three scholarships. Justin Hellman, Mika Strickler and Wahida Baker have each earned awards to continue studies in the field, said Christian Sinclair, CMES assistant director.

Hellman, an honors student and a junior in Near Eastern studies, is studying Hebrew at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem during the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009. Mika Strickler, an honors student and a Near Eastern studies major, will study Arabic at the American University in Cairo in the spring of 2009. Wahida Baker, an honors senior double majoring in anthropology and Near Eastern studies, is continuing her Arabic studies at the UA.

The scholarship award amount varies, and can range from $250 to $1,000, depending on available funds. Scholarship recipients are selected by the CMES Governing Board.
