University of Arizona President Robert N. Shelton continued his annual tradition of assisting new UA students moving in to campus residence halls on Wednesday.
About a third of the approximately 6,000 students living in UA residence halls arrived on campus Wednesday, which marked the first day of the UA’s Wildcat Welcome program.
Shelton was one of dozens of UA volunteers who donned red T-shirts to help freshman students and their families as they arrived at Coronado Hall to begin their careers at the UA. His participation is part of the annual Wildcat Welcome for thousands of new and returning UA students.
"This is one of the most exciting times of the year," Shelton said. "The goal for all of us is to ensure that our students have the best educational experience possible."
In addition to Shelton, volunteers from UA student affairs, police, Parents & Family Association and other departments helped students carry furniture and other belongings into their rooms.
New freshman Jake Gogan, who arrived from Colorado Springs, Colo. on Monday, was pleased with how his transition has gone so far. “I chose the UA because of the location, temperature and the campus,” said Gogan, who plans to major in marketing at the UA. “Now I am just looking to get to know some people.”
For Jake’s mother, Kim Gogan, this is the third time she has dropped off a child at college and the first time at the UA. “This has been much easier than the other two times,” she said.
Although she just arrived on campus, freshman Jerelyn Weinstein chose to volunteer on the Wildcat Welcome “Hi Team.” Team members greeted new residents and helped them to become acquainted with their new home.
"I came to the UA because I really like the campus, and being from southern California, I like the warm weather," Weinstein, who expects to major in business, said.
Wildcat Welcome activities and special services are organized annually to assist students with their transition back to school for the fall semester. Wildcat Welcome continues through the first week of classes.
Classes begin on Monday, Aug. 25.
