The Panhellenic recruitment process schedule has been moved up a few days to minimize academic interruptions and traffic flow on campus.

The Panhellenic Sorority Formal Recruitment begins today with sorority members and interested recruits getting an early start to move into their University of Arizona residence halls.

The Panhellenic recruitment schedule has been moved up two days this year to allow sorority recruitment efforts to commence the week before classes begin. This will help to minimize academic interruptions and traffic flow on the UA campus.

“This is the first year that sorority recruitment is starting a few days early and we are allowing women participating in it to move in today from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. It will be especially busy at Coronado Hall and Arizona Sonora Hall as a few hundred women move into those halls today,” said Pam Obando, associate director of communications and outreach for UA residence life.

Regular move-in begins Thursday, Aug. 21 at 8 a.m. and ends on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. Obando said some students choose to move-in early on Aug. 20, which is available for an additional fee.

“It is a busy time as 5,700 undergraduate students, about 80 percent of them new freshmen, move into their new homes on campus, and say goodbye to their parents and families. Many UA staff and current students help the new students carry in their boxes giving them a Wildcat welcoming hand," Obando added.

The one-week Panhellenic recruitment process ends August 24.

“The recruitment schedule week involves as many as 1,200 UA women visiting sorority chapter houses along 1st and 2nd Street between Mountain and Campbell Avenues,” said Jenny French Nirh, senior coordinator for fraternity and sorority programs.

On Sunday, Aug. 24, the Annual Panhellenic Sorority Bid Day will be held at the Student Union Memorial Center and at the individual sorority chapter facilities.

“Bid Day is the name given for the day new sorority members receive their invitations for membership and it is tradition that when the invitation is received, to run from the SUMC to their respective chapter facility,” added Nirh.

To avoid traffic flow issues, traffic violations and the potential for pedestrian injury, UAPD and Parking and Transportation, will temporarily restrict traffic along 1st Street, between Cherry Avenue and Mountain Avenue, and Mountain Avenue between Speedway Boulevard and 1st Street for up to three hours on the Aug. 24.
