Gail Burd, distinguished professor of molecular and cellular biology and associate dean of The University of Arizona College of Science, has been appointed to serve as vice provost for academic affairs.

As vice provost, Burd will work closely with campus leaders to coordinate programs that will advance the academic mission of the University and help colleges and departments develop their academic degree programs.

She will guide working groups charged with supporting the UA’s academic enterprise and will be the lead administrator in the office of Meredith Hay, executive vice president and provost, in the administration of academic program reviews and overseeing accreditation reviews.

"I am delighted to be selected as vice provost for academic affairs and to begin working with Provost Hay on many new projects,” Burd said. “One large project that I will oversee is the 2010 NCA accreditation. This project will require coordination and collaboration with many colleges and student services units. I look forward to working with faculty, staff and students across campus on this project."

Burd has an exceptional record of service in her teaching, research and administrative career at the UA, which spans 22 years.

Burd is recognized internationally as an expert on the development and neural plasticity in the vertebrate olfactory system.

A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, she has served on numerous government panels for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

As associate dean of the UA College of Science, Burd has worked to increase the recruitment of top academic scholars and minority students, improve retention and graduation rates, decrease the time to graduation and increase research opportunities for undergraduates.

She has received numerous awards for her undergraduate teaching, including several honors from the UA Mortar Board, the Director’s Award at Student Showcase, the Innovative Teaching Award from the UA College of Science, the Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award from the Dean of Students and the Sarlo Family Foundation Outstanding Faculty Award.

Burd was named a University Distinguished Professor in 2003.
