The University of Arizona has made yet another step to strengthen the collaboration between units on campus that handle all things student-related.

The UA Office of Enrollment Management, the division that handles student recruitment and enrollment, become a part of the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs on July 1. In a campuswide memo released last week, UA Executive Vice President and Provost Meredith Hay said that the realignment came with support from UA President Robert N. Shelton.

“I am confident this new realignment of responsibilities will better serve the mission of this institution,” Hay wrote.

The change will allow the UA to “more effectively meet the needs of our students,” Hay said. “This reorganization is a direct result of President Shelton’s recognition that attracting top-level students, and providing financial aid and on-campus support to those students, is best achieved as a comprehensive and coordinated campus effort.”

Student Affairs and its various divisions offer programs, services and resources while also overseeing a number of facilities on campus. The unit is responsible for engaging the student body, improving student retention and success, building campus diversity and conducting research, among other things.

Other units and departments that fall under Student Affairs include the Arizona Student Unions, Associated Students of the University of Arizona, Campus Health, the Disability Resource Center and the Dean of Students Office.

“I think this is important for a lot of reasons. Now, we have a way of showing more continuity of service and how we work with students,” said Melissa Vito, vice president for student affairs. Vito also noted that over the years her division has worked with Kohn and his office on various partnerships. Given the range of units that fall under student affairs, she added, the division has contact with potential students as children through their time at the UA.

Units within enrollment management include undergraduate admissions, financial aid and the registrar’s office and all operate under the direction of Paul Kohn, the UA’s vice provost for enrollment management and dean of admissions.

“This will support the retention of our students, help us to be more coordinated and maximizes our resources,” Vito said. “I think the biggest gain is that we can have a more consistent message about what kind of community students are joining and making sure all the areas we work with in student affairs meet those goals and offer consistent service.”
