Mexico's Former Minster of Health to Speak on Border Health Risks, Opportunities

Julio Frenk, international health scholar, will speak at the UA on "Globalization and Health: Risks and Opportunities on Our Common Border."

The international health policy expert advocates for universal health insurance and health system innovations.


Renowned health policy scholar Julio Frenk, Mexico's former minister of health, will speak Wednesday at The University of Arizona on "Globalization and Health: Risks and Opportunities On Our Common Border."

Frenk will deliver the inaugural talk in the James E. Dalen, MD, MPH, Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture Series. The talk is at Drachman Hall, Room B109, at the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

While he was minister of health, Frenk's administration was involved in an ambitious effort to provide universal health insurance. Today, he works in Seattle and Mexico City.

In Seattle, he serves as senior fellow at the Global Health Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and also as the chairman of the board of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

In Mexico City, he serves as the president of the CARSO Health Institute, a new foundation focusing on health systems innovations in Latin America.

Prior to joining the Mexican government, Frenk held positions as executive director of evidence and information policy at the World Health Organization, executive vice president of the Mexican Health Foundation and was founding director-general of Mexico's National Institute of Public Health.

Frenk obtained his medical degree from the National University of Mexico in 1979. He also holds a doctorate in medical care organization and sociology, a master of public health degree and a master of arts degree in sociology from the University of Michigan.

The Dalen Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture Series was established to honor Dr. James E. Dalen's countless contributions to the advancement of the UA and his key role in establishing the College of Public Health. Dalen served as the UA's vice president for health sciences and dean of the college of medicine.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
