Best-selling authors, health and nutrition experts and nutrition researchers will kick off an informative discussion on good food – from the personal to the global – during a public forum on nutrition and health.

The public forum will be the opening event of the 2008 "Nutrition and Health: State of the Science and Clinical Applications" conference – a continuing education conference for physicians, nurses, dietitians and other health professionals being held Monday, April 14, through Wednesday, April 16, at the Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix.

Integrative medicine pioneer and best-selling author Andrew Weil, director of the UA Program in Integrative Medicine, discussed "The Optimum Diet" and nationally-recognized nutrition researcher David Wallinga, director of the Antibiotic Resistance Project at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, or IATP, in Minneapolis, Minn., discussed "Healthy Food in Healthcare: Making Change Happen." Both speakers will answer health and nutrition questions from the public.

The conference provides health professionals with the latest nutrition research and practices from distinguished speakers, including:

  • Andrew Weil, director, UA Program in Integrative Medicine.
  • Fredi Kronenberg, professor of clinical physiology in rehabilitation medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • Jeffrey Blumberg, professor, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University.
  • David Heber, professor, medicine, and founding director, University of California, Los Angeles Center for Human Nutrition.
  • Michael Holick, professor, medicine, dermatology, physiology and biophysics, Boston University.
  • Victoria Maizes, executive director, UA Program in Integrative Medicine.
  • David Perlmutter, neurologist, Perlmutter Health Center, Naples, Fla.

Topics will include:

  • The latest developments in nutrigenomics, dietary supplements, organics, vegetarian diets, phytochemicals and more.
  • The health value of specific foods for heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis and other chronic health conditions.
  • Interaction between genes and diet and the health implications for different types of patients.
  • The central role of nutrition in health and healing and how to integrate nutrition into medicine.
  • Current issues in nutrition and cancer.

"Ask the Experts" question-and-answer sessions will be featured each day. Food tastings will underscore the conference message and copies of most recipes will be available.

The conference is presented by the UA Program in Integrative Medicine and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
