Geography and Regional Development Marks 50 Years

The department has grown to become one of the largest and best-known in the U.S.

Members of The University of Arizona department of geography and regional development will celebrate the department’s 50th anniversary this week with special activities for alumni and colleagues.

Events include speakers, networking opportunities, excursions and a gala celebration. The Friday networking sessions are in four areas: geographic information system, known as GIS, and its relevance to the public and private sectors; land development and regional growth and change; human and environmental system interactions; and social justice and community outreach.

This 50th anniversary celebration will give us the opportunity to celebrate our many milestones, connect with old friends and make new ones, and support our current and future students,” says J.P. Jones, head of the department.

The department’s two undergraduate degrees, the bachelor of arts in geography and the nachelor of science in regional development, this year have attracted more than 400 majors, more than double what it was five years ago. The department also boasts the second largest geography and regional development undergraduate program in the United States. In addition, its graduate students regularly win grants and fellowships from some of the most competitive funding organizations in the country, and its faculty are internationally recognized for their quality research and education.
