Holocaust Vigil Promotes Tolerance, Understanding

Student organizers invite the public to join them for events beginning at 10 a.m. March 26 and ending 24 hours later.
The University of Arizona Hillel Foundation will host a 24-hour Holocaust vigil dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust as well as other genocides still occurring worldwide.
The “Unto Every Number There is a Name” vigil includes a variety of events on the UA Mall and speakers beginning on Wednesday and 10 a.m. and ending Thursday at 10 a.m.
The UA campus community and general public are invited to attend.
“Each year the students at Hillel work to put together a meaningful event to so that history is not forgotten," said Michelle Blumenberg, executive director of the UA Hillel Foundation. "This year our students wanted to draw attention to the fact that genocide is still happening globally. We hope the UA community will draw together and join us in raising awareness and learn what we can do to help stop it.”
The vigil is an annual initiative designed and organized by student members of the UA Hillel Foundation.
The complete schedule of events:
- 10:30-11 a.m. - Deborah Kaye, adjunct professor in the UA’s Arizona Center for Judaic Studies.
- 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. - Wendy Theodore, assistant professor in the UA Africana Studies Program, discusses the actions needed to stop genocide.
- 12:30-2 p.m. - Holocaust survivors Lily Brull, Selma Neuhauser, Irving Senor.
- 2:30-3 p.m. - Shlomo Aronson, visiting professor of Israeli studies at the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies, discusses Israel’s message on the Holocaust.
- 3-3:30 p.m. - Holocaust survivor Wanda Wolosky.
- 4-4:15 p.m. Cathy Busha, director of UA LGBTQ Affairs, discusses discrimination and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community.
- 5-5:30 p.m. - Darfur refugees share personal experiences and outline what can be done to help stop genocide in the region.
- 5:30-6 p.m. - Open discussion with the Lost Boys of Sudan and updates on Darfur from genocide experts.
- 6 p.m. - Free dinner.
- 6:30-8 p.m. - Free screening of the film “Darfur.”
- 8-10 p.m. - Free screening of the film “Paper Clips.”
- 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. - Free screening of the film “Schindler’s List.”
- 2 a.m.-4 a.m. Free screening of the film “Hotel Rwanda.”
- 4-6 a.m. Free screening of the film “Life is Beautiful.”
- 7 a.m. - Free breakfast.
- 9:30-10 a.m. - Closing ceremony.
