Despite a Bit of Rain and Snow, Drought Persists
The monthly climate report from the UA CLIMAS office points to La Niña as the cause of continued dry conditions in the region.
Despite a persistent La Niña in the Pacific Ocean, Arizona got a bit of drought relief from the recent rain and snow.
But University of Arizona climate scientists at the Climate Assessment for the Southwest progam, or CLIMAS, caution that La Niña conditions will continue, bringing below-average precipitation levels for most of the foreseeable future.
The “January 2008 Southwest Climate Update” from CLIMAS says that much of Arizona and New Mexico "observed below-average precipitation over the past 30 days. Only northern portions of both states saw average to above-average precipitation due to storms crossing the region in early January.”
The online report also features articles on the current snowpack levels, streamflow and a piece by Julie Malmber from the Western Water Assessment on the different forecasting methods used by scientists.
