Donald E. Myers has been named the 2008 Distinguished Lecturer by the International Association of Mathematics Geology.

The International Association for Mathematical Geology has named an emeritus professor of mathematics at The University of Arizona as its 2008 Distinguished Lecturer.

Donald E. Myers, one of the “giants” in the association, has spent his career applying mathematics and statistics to Earth and environmental sciences. Myers’ expertise in geostatistics, for example, helps mining companies explore for new deposits. He also has studied the relationship between rainfall and runoff patterns, air pollution and other contaminant plumes.

The Canadian-based IAMG promotes the use of mathematics, statistics and informatics to the geosciences. Geostatistics has a wide array of applications in other disciplines in the geosciences, including agriculture, hydrology and civil engineering, geography and epidemiology.

Myers, who began teaching at the UA in 1960 after earning a doctorate from the University of Illinois, has drawn collaborators from across the UA, including students, in his research.
