Eller's Hsinchun Chen Awarded IEEE Fellowship

Hsinchun Chen, management information systems professor at the Eller College of Management, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Recognized for his contributions to the development of medical, intelligence and security informatics, the designation is conferred by the IEEE board of directors for "an extraordinary record of accomplishments."

Widely reknowned for his work in security-related information technology, Chen is founding conference co-chair of the IEEE international Conferences on Intelligence and Security Informatics. The conference has become the premiere meeting for national and homeland security IT research.

Chen is the creator of COPLINK, a system that enables law enforcement and intelligence agencies to seamlessly access data sources. The COPLINK system has become a national model for public safety information sharing and analysis, and has been adopted in more than 150 agencies across the country. The database technology behind COPLINK has recently been expanded to the areas of border protection (BorderSafe), disease and bioagent surveillance (BioPortal) and terrorism informatics research (Dark Web).

A member of The University of Arizona faculty since 1989, Chen is the McClelland Professor of Management Information Systems. He is founding director of the Artificial Intelligence Lab, which includes more than 40 researchers, and the Hoffman e-Commerce Lab. The MIS department at the Eller College of Management has maintained a top five ranking by US News and World Report since the inception of its rating system, also in 1989.

Chen's numerous awards include AT&T Foundation Award, the Andersen Consulting Professor of the Year Award, The University of Arizona Technology Innovation Award and the National Chaio-Tung University Distinguished Alumnus Award.
