About UANews

UANews is a service of the Office of University Relations, Communications and the primary source of information and news about the University of Arizona.

Members of our office report and write about the people, programs, research and advances at the University of Arizona. This information is published daily on UANews and is available to readers around the world as well as to members of the media. Our office also produces UANow, an email summary of the top UA news, which is sent every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

UANews is also the home of the Master Calendar, the UA's most comprehensive listing of information on lectures, conferences, sports events, performances, exhibits, tours, academic dates, workshops, health activities, doctoral orals, professional development classes, camps, special events and more.

The Office of University Relations, Communications serves as the world's portal for news and information about the UA. This office coordinates the release of major news events at the UA and articulates the University's critical contributions to society.

The Office also provides internal communications services to the UA's community of 15,300 employees more than 41,000 students through the email newsletter publication Lo Que Pasa.

Andrea Smiley
Associate Vice President, Communications

Andrea Smiley is an award-winning and PRSA-accredited communicator, specializing in public relations and strategic communications. Smiley’s 26-year tenure in Arizona has included local leadership roles, as well as nationally as Vice President of Marketing for Magellan Health Services’ behavioral health division. Smiley was Vice President of Strategic Communications for Avant Strategies, a Phoenix public relations and marketing agency, and served as Chief Community Relations Officer for Magellan of Arizona. She also served as Associate Executive Director for Public Affairs and External Relations with the Arizona Board of Regents and as Assistant Vice President, Communications for the Arizona Medical Association. Smiley received her undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and she studied at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, as part of her master’s program in Communications Management.


Pila Martinez

Pila Martinez assists the Associate Vice President for Communications in oversight of the office, including all components of special projects that come to Communications from other University departments or divisions that require collaboration and partnership with other entities within or outside of the University. Martinez also oversees and directs internal communications and engagement efforts, including but not limited to: Lo Que Pasa, town halls, special employee events, forum and administrative speaking opportunities. Martinez also supports the Associate Vice President for Communications with issue management and crisis communications in both the development and execution.


Doug Carroll
Director of Media Relations and Communications

Doug Carroll assists the Associate Vice President for Communications in oversight of the Office and is responsible for the production of UANow and UANews, the primary digital communications vehicles for University news. Carroll also oversees media relations, coordinating news releases, events and media requests, and assists with communications strategies for the University. He was a reporter and editor for the Arizona Republic for 18 years.


Alexis Blue

Alexis Blue is the editor of the Lo Que Pasa employee newsletter and oversees the UA@Work website and UA Master Calendar. Blue also serves as a senior writer for the Office, covering the University in areas that include psychology, sociology, anthropology and the health sciences.


Kimberly Davis

Through tweets, likes and grams, Kimberly Davis manages the UA's social media presence. Her expertise includes experience in digital storytelling as a filmmaker, which she employs in her approach to social media, integrating photography and video. Davis is originally from Colorado, received her degree in journalism from the University of New Mexico, and holds an M.F.A. in filmmaking from the University of North Texas.


Bob Demers

Bob Demers manages video media production and resources for the Office, producing, shooting and editing programming for UANews, UANow and Lo Que Pasa. Demers has more than 30 years of experience in broadcast journalism, media production and filmmaking, and he loves to talk shop.

La Monica Everett-Haynes is responsible for covering the arts, humanities, social sciences, student research and student life. In the Office, Everett-Haynes also is manager of the UA Blog and supervises the work-study student workers.


Robin Tricoles

Robin Tricoles is a science writer in the Office of University Relations, Communications. Before joining the University, she was a freelance science writer and contractor based in Washington, DC. Robin previously served as a science writer for Emory University, where she covered basic research and medicine, and for Georgia State University, where she covered the life and physical sciences. She has also served as a science reporter and local host for All Things Considered at WUGA-FM, a public radio affiliate based in Athens, Georgia. Before moving to Georgia, she was the managing editor of the journal Evolution while it was based at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Robin holds a master’s degree in science writing from The Johns Hopkins University; a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz; and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Diego State University.


Emily Litvack

Emily Litvack is a science writer. She coordinates with University researchers and their collaborators to write stories illuminating UA’s influence in the scientific community. Litvack received her bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in journalism from Northern Arizona University. She is an expert generalist, writing about everything from southwestern climate, to astrophysics, to tech. As a writer, Litvack is particularly interested in narrative nonfiction and digital storytelling. Her passions are telling stories and solving problems.


Nick Prevenas

Nick Prevenas serves as a senior news writer for the Office, covering the areas of engineering, research, technology and rankings. He is also responsible for producing the daily news summary, while assisting with media relations and maintaining the Office's media contacts database.


Chris Green

Chris Green builds and manages online applications designed to be easy to use for non-developers and developers alike.  Chris is shared with all of University Relations as a web developer resource.  He is a Drupal expert, and is always happy to help others in using and exploiting its power.


Michael Hume

Michael Hume manages all things IT-related in the Office. Responsibilities include maintenance and development of UANews and UA@Work. Hume also manages the newsletter systems for Lo Que Pasa, UAnnounce and UANow.
