20 Tons of Glass, Fresh Out of the Oven
The Giant Magellan Telescope’s third primary mirror was unveiled at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory Mirror Lab on Friday. The UA is producing all seven mirrors that will combine into a light-gathering surface 80 feet in diameter for the largest telescope ever built.
Three UA Professors Elected as AAAS Fellows
UA faculty members Malcolm Hughes, Katrina Marie Miranda and Diana E. Wheeler have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The honor is only bestowed upon those individuals who maintain a proven record of advancing knowledge and applications determined to be scientifically or socially distinguished.
Creating the ‘Super Land-Grant’ University
Never Settle, the UA’s strategic academic and business plan, will position the University to become a “super land-grant” institution. In a presentation to the Arizona Board of Regents, UA President Ann Weaver Hart and other UA leaders laid out plans for enrollment growth, faculty development, increased research expenditures and improved technology commercialization. Such efforts, Hart said, will help improve the workforce, grow the state economy and aid in national competitiveness.

Three UA faculty members have been conferred with the highly prestigious rank of Regents' Professor: Hsinchun Chen, Xiaohui Fan and Neal R. Armstrong in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Eric A. Betterton and Charles W. Scruggs were inducted as Distinguished Professors.
UA McGuire Center Named Innovator of the Year
The UA's McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship was named Innovator of the Year in academia during the Governor's Celebration of Innovation gala. All finalists for the award were from the UA, representing innovative programs in agriculture, the biological sciences and environmental science.
