American Indian Language Development Institute

Five Indigenous speakers of the Wounaan language in Panama will join other Native language speakers, advocates and educators at the annual American Indian Language Development Institute scheduled for June 7-29. Located in the College of Education, AILDI has offered the summer residential program for over 30 years.

The AILDI experience offers courses related to language teaching, maintenance, documentation and revitalization. Courses taught by renowned faculty with established backgrounds in Indigenous language education, linguistics and language activism.

Concurrent to the regular summer courses, AILDI is offering two workshops designed for those who may not be able to take on a residency program. Culturally Responsive Language Assessment will be led by Lizette Peters, Ph.D., Kansas University. Peters has extensive experience in working with the Cherokee Nation and she will share a new, innovative method of evaluation incorporating tribal culture, community and re-defines the role of the evaluator.

Indigenous Knowledge and Science Education for K-14 will be taught by Greg Cajete (Tewa), Ph.D., University of New Mexico. Cajete’s workshop is sponsored by a unique, cooperative program now in its third year, between AILDI, Research in Optics for K-14 Educators and Teachers (ROKET) and the Center for Integrated Access Networks (CIAN). The goal of the workshop is to help teachers develop science curriculum that incorporates Indigenous concepts of knowledge and culture.

Project SEED (Scholarships for Education and Economic Development) provides comprehensive academic and professional development for Indigenous Mexican teachers.  This is the third year that the SEED Project will interact with AILDI students.

Public presentations by Peters, the Wounaan and the SEED cohort are open to all. The presentations will take place in the College of Education Kiva Auditorium from 12-12:45 p.m. on June 11, 14, 22 and 26. For more information, visit the AILDI website at aildi.arizona.edu.
