Expect sizzling temperatures to return Oct. 22 on the UA Mall as about 500 engineering freshmen take part in a mass cook-off using solar ovens they designed and built themselves.
About 500 students, faculty and industry representatives are expected to turn out for the College of Engineering's Solar Oven Throw Down, where Engineering 102 teams will showcase their creativity and mathematical prowess in a bid to most accurately calculate the expected temperatures of their thermodynamic designs.
It's fun with a serious purpose — it wraps up a course of study that engineering freshmen recently completed on thermodynamics and systems modeling and design.
The event is sponsored by W.L. Gore — an indicator of the UA College of Engineering’s strong ties with industry, which are critical to providing the nation's next generation of engineers.
In ENGR 102's solar oven project, freshman engineering students spend classroom time poring over spreadsheets and thermodynamics equations and then design the best possible solar oven and predict the temperature it will reach. At the Solar Oven Throw Down student teams test their ovens to determine the accuracy of their predictions. Some of the solar oven designs on display Oct. 22 will reach temperatures close to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. There will be smoke!
