Healthy Heart Conference

Do something good for your heart during February, which is Heart Health Month. The Sarver Heart Center is offering a morning in which you can obtain valuable health screenings, information and lectures to help you understand your risk factors and what you can do to prevent the onset of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. You'll also have an opportunity to learn about the latest medications and procedures that are available to treat heart disease.

Schedule:

  • 7:30-9 a.m. Registration, health screenings, light breakfast, health fair information
  • 9-9:45 a.m. Welcome and overview on heart disease discussion featuring Gordon A. Ewy, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the Sarver Heart Center, and Karl B. Kern, M.D., professor of medicine, interim chief of the Section of Cardiology in the College of Medicine, and chair of the UA Sarver Heart Center Resuscitation Research Group
  • 9:45 a.m. Break
  • 10-10:45 a.m. Session 1
  • 11 a.m.-Noon  Session 2

Attendees select two of the following session topics:

  • "Stroke: Where do we go from here?" presented by Leslie Ritter, R.N., Ph.D., professor of neurology and nursing
  • "Controlling Diabetes for Cardiovascular Health" presented by Betsy Dokken, Ph.D., N.P., assistant professor of medicine
  • "Heart Disease: How Men and Women are Different" presented by Lori Mackstaller, M.D., associate professor of medicine
  • "The Mechanics of the Heart: New Procedures for Keeping the Electrical and Arterial Systems Tuned Up" presented by Raj Janardhanan, M.D., associate professor of medicine, and Peter Ott, M.D., associate professor of medicine
  • "From the Label to the Table: Choosing Heart Healthy and Carb Smart Foods" presented by dietitians from the University of Arizona Medical Center, including Jessica Bursey, R.D.; Joan Wessels, R.D.; and Kelli Yee, R.D.

Health screenings for blood pressure, diabetes and asthma, as well as prescription consults will be offered by UA College of Pharmacy students until 9 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
